Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Tuesday that the man allegedly plowed dozens of club fans in East Hollywood early Saturday morning would face more than 70 detectives.
Fernando Ramirez, 29, faced a 37-count attempted murder and a 37-count assault with a deadly weapon, Hochman explained that 37 counts were per victim, and that the deadly weapon used in this suspected attack was a car.
At about 2am, San Clemente resident Ramirez drove onto the sidewalk outside the club in the 1000 block of North Vermont Avenue, “stricken people there,” Hochmann claimed.
Hochmann said he was grateful that no one was dead, but that many serious injuries have occurred, including “serious fractures, tears, fractures.”
“But, because of God’s grace, this may have been a mass event,” he said.
“It’s a real miracle that no one was killed that night,” said Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell.
Fernando Ramirez is seen in undated booking photos released by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office on January 10, 2020. Regarding Ramirez’s alleged motive, the prosecutor said “will come up in court.”
If convicted, Ramirez can receive multiple life sentences. Prior to his trial, he is being held without bail.
He is scheduled to be arrested Wednesday.
“Mr. Ramirez faces full accountability for his actions when we put him in court and looks forward to the opportunity. If it’s a ju umpire, a ju umpire and convicts him of each of these numbers… At that point, we will tell him to clean up the rest of his life,” Hockman said.
Police are searching for a man suspected of shooting a driver who ploughed into a crowd at an East Hollywood nightclub.
Another man who allegedly shot Ramirez in the Butt department after the crash is still being sought by police.
“We understand the feelings involved, but when the threat ended and the suspect was no longer actively hurting others, the use of lethal force was illegal and dangerous to everyone in existence,” McDonnell said.
