A rally took place in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, opposed the push to privatize the US Postal Service.
Last month, President Donald Trump said the US Post Office could be placed under the control of the Commerce Department in becoming the acquisition of the agency’s executive branch.
Federal workers, union members, TSA and members of the Congress were among those present in solidarity.
“We make sure that every member of Congress understands the importance of the Post Office to America. They are ready to support it, and those who cannot support it should not be elected to the office,” said Maxine Waters representative.
In a letter sent to members of Congress, Postmaster Louis DeJoy said he plans to cut 10,000 workers and billions of dollars from the U.S. Postal Service Budget by working with Elon Musk’s government efficiency.
Esteban Velázquez, a postman for over 20 years, ensures that the department remains solid thanks to the honest work of those who may be affected by possible layoffs.
“The agency has over 600,000 employees nationwide and after hearing the threat of the president and the members of the Cabinet, they guarantee they will fight for their rights,” Velazquez said.
Protesters said they would continue to unite in their mission to build a movement that promises to protect workers’ rights and improve the lives of their families and communities.
“We’ve always wanted a system that’s been working in this country, and that’s what we say is no and we say no to keep the postal system private,” Sen. Maria Elena Durazo said.
