Illinois Democrat Delia Ramirez was widely criticised on social media this week for a clip that said her pride as a Guatemalan comes before her pride that she is an American.
“I was Guatemalan before I became an American,” Ramirez declared in Spanish at the second annual Panamerican Conference in Mexico City over the weekend.
The comments have sparked rage on social media from many conservatives, suggesting that lawmakers’ loyalty is misplaced.
“Are you happy with this?” Utah GOP Sen. Mike Lee posted to X.

“Well, it’s okay,” actor James Woods posted on X.
“Please say that while working in the US Congress, GOP Rep. Claudia Tenney from New York posted it to X.
“People who value other countries in America do not belong to Congress,” conservative commentator Charlie Kirk posted on X. “Period.”
“The anger towards Ramirez isn’t about how she defines herself, it’s not about being an American,” Fox News contributor Jonathan Turley posted on X.
This comment attracted the attention of the Department of Homeland Security. This was posted on a social media page in response to a quote from former President Theodore Roosevelt.

“There is no room for hyphen Americanism in this country… Americanism is a matter of spirit and soul,” Post said. “Our loyalty must be purely necessary for the United States. We must accuse other loyalty-holders of nothingness.”
“It’s shocking to hear members of Congress openly state their loyalty to other countries,” Ohio Republican GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy posted on X.
“She should be arrested, degenerated and deported,” conservative commentator Matt Walsh posted on X.
Ramirez, who is on the House Committee on Homeland Security, accused the United States of prioritizing “imperialism, militarization, conquest, domination and attempts to dominate.”
On her website, Ramirez, the child of immigrant parents, said her husband is illegally in the country, saying that she is “the only member of Congress in a mixed-status marriage and will fight for the rights and comprehensive immigration reform of dreamers like her husband Boris.”
Ramirez defended the comments in a statement released by her office.

“To honor my Guatemalan ancestors only strengthens my commitment to America,” the statement said. “That’s the truth I always carry with me, and that’s the truth that many Americans carry with them.”
“Anyone who denys our claims about this country simply because we are dare to respect our diverse heritage and immigrant roots is only exposing how their own ideas in America are truly vulnerable and small.”
