Thousands of Californians received reminders on Tuesday that automates the arrival of next week’s Election Day. That’s not the case except for most voters.
The incorrect message emailed to voters in Los Angeles and Orange County arrives with the subject line that reads “a week left to return the vote,” and “votes will be mailed and postmarked.” It’s the last day,” he told voters. Election officials said the incomplete messages came from Ballottrax, the software that sends automated messages to voters about the status of their email voting. The Denver-based company has been working with the California Secretary since 2020.
Ballottrax president Steve Olsen said automated reminders should be coming to around 100,000 voters in two legislative districts, including parts of Los Angeles, Orange, Kern and Tulair Counties. Special primary elections are being held in these districts next week.
“Reminders went out to many other voters due to geotargeting errors,” Olsen said in an email. He said the company is still investigating and will send a withdrawal as soon as it determines which voters have received the message by mistake.
The Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder office said “almost every” voter in LA County received the false message from voters subscribed to Ballottrax updates.
“We apologize for the confusion this caused,” said California Secretary of State Shirley Weber.
Voters in San Gabriel Valley, Santa Monica and San Fernando Valley reported they have received messages for voters in the state Senate District 36, which covers coastal Orange County, Little Saigon and parts of South Lau County.
The district holds its primary on February 25th, replacing former state senator Janet Nuguen, who resigned in November after winning a seat on the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
In Central Valley, voters from Tulea and Kern counties will vote next week, filling the state legislative vacancy left by Vincefon, a Bakersfield Republican, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives last year.
