The Houseways and Means Committee hearing took an unexpected turn Wednesday when Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) accused Scott Bescent of interrupting her due to her gender.
The exchange occurred during a tense five-minute questioning session. There, Sanchez challenged Bescent on the impact of tariffs enacted under President Trump’s administration.
“Prices are rising for many everyday products,” Sanchez said. It cites an increase in clothing, shoes, canned food, toys and household items. She added, “On average, it is estimated that Trump’s tariffs will cost $3,000 more households on the same item than last year,” but she did not cite the source of the person when pushed.

When Bescent tried to intervene, Sanchez quickly cut him off.
The statement spurred a moan from the hearing room, and one attendee responded in a way that made him hear, “Oh, come on.” Sanchez replied: “No, sorry, but we’re talking all the time, and I don’t want that to happen at this hearing.”
Bester, who is openly gay, did not deal with the accusations and instead focused on defending the administration’s trade policy.
When Sanchez challenged him about the effects of pricing and China’s trade actions, Bescent replied, “It’s wrong,” saying, “They met their agreement under President Trump in 2020, and President Biden did not enforce them.”

Sanchez repeatedly argued that American consumers are paying more for tariffs, explaining that recent negotiations with China are rushed and lacking transparency. “A trade contract that is inadequately negotiated with China is probably not worth the paper it is written on,” she said. “I was wary this morning when I heard that Trump said that a deal between the US and China was made after two days of talks in London.”

Bessent defended the contract as the first step. “Trades hit are a specific goal and it will be a much longer process,” he said, adding that “China has proven its unreliable partner.”
The conflict between Sanchez and Becent has been repeatedly moderated by Chairman Adrian Smith (R-NE).
The moment has quickly spread to social media, with the official, quick response accounts of the White House calling the move “shameful.”
