Another leader and military veteran replaced the term-restricted governor Gretchen Whitmer, throwing his name into the candidate’s growth list in the Michigan governor’s race.
On Monday, Trump’s ally, Republican Rep. John James announced he would begin bidding for governor and become the latest GOP candidate to jump into the primary.
“I am running for Michigan’s great governor,” James shared in an X’s statement.
James has now joined state Senate Republican leader Arik Nesbitt as the latest Republican to jump into the governor’s primary, Hill reported. Meanwhile, candidates for the Democratic primary race include Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, while Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is running as an independent.

After speaking on July 15, 2024, on the opening day of the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, John James, the representative of America, walks off the stage.
“Faith and family. God and nation. Serve before self. Michigan first,” James wrote in the announcement.
James says “our state has been suffering long enough,” and is bound by a “lack of strong and capable leadership.”
“For the past seven years, Michigan has been dominated by radical, out-of-touch policies that have hurt our families, our communities and our economy,” James explained in reason to run for governor.
James said the state has lost more than 300,000 manufacturing jobs since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
“Now is the time to drive Michigan’s government out of Fantastisland and return to common sense,” James wrote.
“President Trump and I have been in the corner, now eight years, thick, thin, horns. He is once again doing his part to make America great. I will do my thing to bring prosperity and sanity back to Michigan,” James pledged.

James was first elected to Congress in 2022, becoming a member of Michigan’s first Black Republican Congress and representing the state’s 10th Congressional District.
James will also become Michigan’s first black governor if elected.

He previously ran twice for the Senate, losing to Democrat Debbie Stavenaud in 2018 and Democrat Sen. Gary Peters in 2020.
“Michigan great again,” James wrote in a previous post on X, sharing a video of 47 quick responses about Flint, Michigan.
According to a biographer on the district’s website, James served as a Ranger-qualified Aviation Officer for eight years in active duty.
Zach Bannon, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said James’ announcement was good news for Republicans for continued growth in Congress.

“Republicans are well positioned to hold Michigan’s 10th Congressional District as we retain and grow our majority in Congress. Michigan rejected Touch Democrats’ radical agenda in 2024. We’ll do that again in 2026.”
Bannon pointed out that both President Trump and Rep. James won Michigan’s District 10th in 2024 over 6%.
