A Missouri Republican senator on Wednesday threatened an investigation into one of Los Angeles’ most established immigration organizations, accusing him of “buying anxiety.”
Sen. Josh Hawley said in a letter sent to organisation head Angelica Salas that the coalition of humanitarian immigration rights would “cease and stop further involvement in the organisation, funds, or these illegal activities.”
“A reliable reporting suggests that your organization provided logistics support and financial resources to individuals engaged in these disruptive behavior,” writes Holy, who chairs the Judicial Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism. “Let me be clear: Bankrolling civil unrest is not a protected speech. It supports and behaves in criminal activity. Therefore, we must be immediately involved in organizing, funding or promotion of these illegal activities and ending any further involvement.”
Holy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Salas, a longtime immigration rights activist who has promoted sanctuary state laws and organised dozens of peaceful protests over the years, said the charges were false and pointed to the years of peaceful organisation made by groups in Los Angeles.
“This is trying to take the spotlight from the pain and suffering that this administration is causing,” she said. “I refuse to make it about anyone other than them.”
She said the federal government is engaged in a coordinated effort to strip immigrants of their rights by undermining the groups that support them.
The Holy letter follows this week’s announcement by the House Panel that it will investigate 200 non-governmental organizations, including Chaira, who were “involved in providing services or support to unacceptable aliens amid the Biden-Harris administration’s historic border crisis.”
In a statement, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Greene (R-TN) and Surveillance, Investigation and Accountability Chairman Josh Bretzin (R-OK) wrote that “these NGOs are looking into whether previous administrations promote illegal activities and promote illegal activities to infiltrate millions of impossible aliens.”
On Friday, federal officials arrested an employee of California President Fuerta, a service employee, on suspicion of interference with a federal officer. The union is one of the groups working with Chairah. The Chief federal prosecutor of Bill Essay in Los Angeles appears to suggest that other union officials and organizers will be investigated on Sunday.
“We saw union activists and organizers involved in these efforts to resist our business,” he told local television station KCAL. “We have a lot of videos online. We have both surveillance videos. We will identify you.
Saras says they’re not doing anything illegal, but she takes the threat seriously.
“It’s very clear that they have an agenda for anyone, anyone in the infrastructure that supports social justice organizations and community rights organizations,” she said. “That’s why they did not only chasing the immigrant community, but also by trying to connect with violent groups by tricking us after the organization, by trying to trust us. This is not normal.”
