Residents of one Los Angeles area are holding street “painting parties” to make crosswalks in the area safer for pedestrians without passing through the city.
Sawtel resident Jonathan Hale, who helped organize several of the parties, said on Wednesday he wanted to protect Erin Myers of KTLA, especially the kids playing at Stoner Park.
“It’s one thing to have something like a stop sign or sign to tell the car to be careful of pedestrians,” Hale said. “But actually putting infrastructure in place is putting infrastructure in place that warns people are intersecting.”
Community members brought in traffic grade paint and stencils every Saturday for four weeks starting May 24th, dedicated their transformation to the crosswalk around Stoner Park.
The community is concerned that drivers are driving the area too fast and too fast, so after discovering how long the process will take, they decide not to go through the city.
“I have to ask the city this and this, and there’s an approval process, you have to budget, and you have to get approval, and you have to get approval, and whatever you know, I don’t want to handle it all, so I decided to do it myself,” Hale said.

In Los Angeles, there is the MyLA311 website that sends requests like this. KTLA reached the city for comment.
Hale admitted that similar actions to paint crosswalks in other cities could be removed, but he says that if that happens in Sawtelle, he could repaint.
