Riverside County Flying Dozens of Out-of-State Pets for Adoption Opportunities

The Riverside County Department of Animal Services has transported 102 shelter animals out of state as part of a life-saving push to reduce overcrowding and give more pets a second chance.

The effort, carried out last week with the support of National Rescue Partners, sent 54 cats to Utah’s Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, marking the biggest cat transport of the year. Another 48 dogs and cats flew to shelters in New York, Texas and Pennsylvania.

“It’s our daily journey, and through hard work and teamwork, we keep the trail burning and help more pets in Riverside County,” said Jackie Schart, Associate Director of RCDAS. “Early mornings and late nights are all worth helping homeless pets start a new chapter.”

The animals were moved from multiple county shelters that are currently exceeding their capacity.

To ease additional pressure on the crammed shelters at home, the department has also launched a new short-term foster parenting initiative called “Ride Ticket.”

The new program will provide a clear timeline of commitment for potential foster parents and help create important kennel spaces for animals that continue to enter the shelter system, officials said.

Currently, recruitment and landfill fees are exempt at all shelter locations. Usually, animal intakes are surged over the summer, so authorities are urging the public to intervene.

“We praise the shelter staff for their dedication to Livcopet and appreciate the strong relationship they have with their lifesaving partner,” said county superintendent Yxstian Gutierrez. “We need to take part in efforts to help our pets find their homes by raising and recruiting amazing animals looking for a new start.”
