Plans are moving forward that turn some of the Inland Empire’s open space into cutting-edge sports complexes.
The large revitalization project will replace old golf courses with vast sports facilities and retail stores and restaurants.
Riverside City officials said the project is a major gain for the city’s northern tip to ultimately provide what it needs to its residents.
“People in the north of town have been looking for grocery stores forever,” said Riverside Mayor Protem Sean Mill. “This project brings it and housing to areas and amenities like restaurants and other things.”
Mill also said the old golf course along Orange Street is the perfect place for a privately funded $200 million investment, as a 126-acre property that has already been discontinued for nearly 20 years.
The new facility will connect to Reid Park, allowing for walking and hiking path construction, amplifying the history of Springbrook Arroyo and Trujillo Adobe.
Mill said the city has full access to the park.
“You don’t have to pay to enter the park, but you don’t have to pay for the amenities like white water rafting that you would if you went to Central Park,” Mayor Protem said.
The project is part of the city’s vision to boost community through the “Return the River to Riverside” campaign.
“The fact that it attracts people from all over the area and experiences the park is fantastic,” Mill said.
