The newborn, dropped next to a trash can outside an apartment along the river, was in stable condition Tuesday as authorities searched for a mother or someone who knew they would move forward.
The infant was found in the 3800 block of Jackson Street near Magnolia Avenue at 2:30pm Sunday, at the 3800 block of Jackson Street, near Magnolia Avenue, according to the Riverside Police Department.
Officer Ryan Railsback said passersby found the baby from hours ago in a garbage enclosure adjacent to the apartment building.
“The boy was lying next to the trash can, breathing, crying, and the umbilical cord was still attached,” Railsback said.
Detectives determined that the infant was abandoned shortly after his mother gave birth to him.
“So far, they have not been able to identify the mother of the baby or anyone who may have placed him near the trash can,” a police spokesman said.
The police department is asking anyone with information to reach out to anyone who has previously shown clear signs of pregnancy, but no longer without an explanation, including witnesses the girl or woman has noticed.

Railsback said the department wants to remind the public of California’s surrendered baby law. It said it allows parents or guardians who are not responsible for the infant within 72 hours of the birth of the child to allow newborns to be safely and legally dropped in any hospital or fire station without question.
