In his remarks at Vice President J.D. Vance’s home state, D-Calif Rep. Ro Khanna contrasted his vision for America’s “new economic patriotism” with the future of the Republican Party who will helm Vance.
Kanna’s remarks at the Cleveland City Club, considered the presidential candidate for 2028 in an already crowded field, appeared to frame an early competition between rising political leaders from the other side of the ideological scope.
Democratic leaders who are likely to be pondering their own presidential election have seized the opportunity to contrast President Donald Trump’s agenda, but Kanna set his sights on Trump’s successor during his remarks Monday.
“Vance and Musk want to keep the government completely out of the way in the new golden age, so that corporate elites, especially high-tech titans, can take the wheels away,” Kanna said. “I say it’s time to turn the tables. It’s time to put Silicon Valley in America’s service rather than serving Silicon Valley. So today I’m looking for a new economic patriotism.

Born in Philadelphia, Kanna promoted her relationship with Ohio in her remarks in Cleveland. Kanna said Trump and Vance campaigned for industrial-American cities to restore economic prosperity, but presented “there are no hopeful visions or real solutions” to cities that manufacture rust belts like Johnstown, Pennsylvania and Warren, Ohio. Now, on behalf of California’s Silicon Valley, Kanna called for “to combine Silicon Valley’s ingenuity with Ohio’s industrial power.”

This week, during a break with US House of Representatives, Kanna crossing the nation and visiting communities tied to his potential political enemies. Kanna visited the manufacturing town of Warren, Ohio on Sunday. This is across the state where Vance was born and raised in Middletown.
Kanna continued her democratic rebuttal of the Republican future at Yale Law School on Tuesday, where both Kanna and Vance are alumni.

At the Munich Security Conference in February, Vance said freedom of speech is “retreating” across Europe. Kanna on Monday called for Americans to stand up and oppose “deportation without legitimate procedures.” It mentions anti-Israel protesters and illegal immigrants targeted by the Trump administration.
Khanna and Vance already have a significant share of sparring on social media. Earlier this year, Vance accused California lawmakers of acting like a “fake” child after Khanna said a former Doge employee should apologise for racially charged social media posts. Khanna told Vance that the staff currently resident should apologise “for both children.”
