An investigation continues into a suspected road rage shooting that left one person dead and another injured on the 5 Freeway on Friday.
A fatal car-on-vehicle shooting forced the California Highway Patrol to close all northbound lanes of the freeway in an East Los Angeles neighborhood Thursday afternoon.
All lanes of northbound Route 5 were reopened just after midnight.
Troopers said the deadly encounter occurred between two people, one in a dark Dodge Durango and the other in a gold Cadillac sedan. The rear window of at least one other vehicle also appeared to have been smashed.
The two vehicles were traveling in the northbound lanes of the Golden State Freeway when the Cadillac rear-ended another vehicle near the Lorena Street overpass around 4:10 p.m. Thursday, according to the CHP.
After stopping nearby, two men in a Dodge Durango got out of the car and began firing at two people inside the Cadillac. The driver was able to make a U-turn on the highway, but ended up colliding with another vehicle and coming to a stop.
Immediately after the shooting, the two suspects returned to their vehicle and drove away.
Los Angeles Fire Department personnel transported the driver to the hospital, where he remains in surgery, the California Highway Patrol said. The passenger died on the highway.
Authorities are continuing to search for the two suspects.
