Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced the restrictions on new visas the Trump administration is implementing against foreign authorities who say it is “conspiratoral” to censor Americans.
“For too long, Americans have been fined, harassed and charged by foreign authorities with exercising their right to free speech,” Rubio wrote to X:

“Foreigners who work to undermine American rights should not enjoy the privilege of traveling to our country,” added the top American diplomat. “The era of passive treatment for those who work to undermine American rights, whether in Latin America, Europe or elsewhere, is over.”
The US has long condemned the censorship and repression by the Chinese Communist Party, Russia, Iran and Cuba regimes, but the Trump administration recently added criticism of its European Union allies.
Vice President JD Vance argued that the EU’s digital services law could effectively export European-style censorship to the United States through pressure on American tech companies.
In February, Vance accused European leaders of suppressing dissent at the Munich Security Conference of classifying these views as “misinformation” and “disinformation.”
The Vice President specifically cited the British prosecution, except for quiet prayers outside the abortion clinic, foreign interference in Romania’s 2024 presidential election results, and convictions of belief in burning the conviction of a Swedish Christian activist online.
“What I’m worried about is the threat from within. The European setback from some of the most fundamental values,” Vance said at the time.
