Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other politicians in the US and Latin America condemned the shooting of Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe on Sunday.

Rubio condemned attempts to assassinate the “violent left rhetoric” that originated from the Colombian government. Uribe, a Colombian senator, is fighting for his life after suffering three gunshot wounds. One of them was in my head.

“The United States is denounced the attempted assassination of Senator Miguel Uribe on the strongest possible terms. This is a direct threat to democracy and the result of violent left-wing rhetoric that comes from the highest level of the Colombian government,” Rubio wrote.

“We have seen Colombia’s direct advances in integrating security and democracy over the past decades, so we cannot afford to return to the dark days of political violence.

Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno also condemned the attack in a statement on social media.

“The attempt to assassinate presidential candidate Miguel Uribe’s main candidate is a sleazy attack on democracy. This evil act must be investigated, and anyone responsible, directly or indirectly, must face rapid punishment,” Moreno wrote.

Chilean President Gabriel Borik also responded to the Uribe shooting.

“My strong condemnation of the attack on former Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribu Turbey. In democracy, violence has no place or justification,” Borick wrote.

“FBI’s KashPatel will know everything we know about the attempted Trump assassination.”

Authorities say Uribe was shot by a 15-year-old hitman and are investigating who is behind the attack.

“Miguel is fighting for his life at this moment. Let’s ask God to guide the hands of the doctors present,” Miguel’s wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, wrote on her husband’s X account. “I ask everyone to join the prayer chain for Miguel’s life.”

Colombian President Gustavo Petro, Uribe’s main opponent in the presidential election, said the attack ordered an investigation beyond the “red line.” He also canceled his planning trip to France this week, citing “the seriousness of the event.”
