Russian leader Vladimir Putin gave President Donald Trump a talent in March, giving him a portrait showing the moment Trump rebelliously pumped his fist into the air after surviving last year’s attempt to assassinate him.

The outlet previously reported the gift as a mystery portrait, but the Russian painter revealed the details behind his work, according to the Russian Embassy.

Artist Nikas Safronov said he created the painting in the hope that the artwork would strengthen US-Russia ties, the Russian Embassy in Kenya said in a post on X on Wednesday.

The painting depicts Trump sending his fist into the air, while his other hand holds a red hat that resembles Trump’s famous Maga hat. The American flag and Statue of Liberty spread out in the background, with blood splashing across the president’s face.

“It was important to me to show blood, scars and his courage during his attempts in life,” Safronov told CNN. “He didn’t break or fear him, but he’ll raise his arms to show that he’s one with America and get back what he deserves.”

The painting is a dramatic illustration of a photo that captures the moment Trump survived an attempted assassination at a presidential rally held in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024.

Safronov portrays many global figures, including the late Pope Francis and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. He told the outlet, “People came to me who wanted me to draw Trump like I was watching him.”

Safronov said he didn’t know who the visitors were, but added that some clients “will not go into the details,” but he suspected it was the Kremlin, the outlet reported.

“When I started painting portraits, I realized this could bring our countries closer and decided not to charge me for money because I doubted what this painting was for,” the artist said.

The painting was given to Trump’s mission, Steve Witkov, in March when officials were in Moscow during a three-year war between Russia and Ukraine, citing Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

The AP said Witkov described the artwork as a “beautiful” portrait by “a major Russian artist,” adding that Trump was “evidently touched by it.”

While Trump and Putin have worked to strengthen their relationship, tensions over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine continue to boil down across the three countries.

Russia recently slammed Kiev overnight with missiles and drones, killing at least 10 people this year in its biggest attack on the Ukrainian capital. The April 24 attack prompted a rare responsibilities from Trump, saying, “Vladimir, stop!”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
