The man behind the wheels of an RV was charged with negligence in a vehicle last week when he attacked and killed a 9-year-old boy on an electric scooter and is driving under the influence.
In a criminal charge filed late Monday by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and obtained by the NBC4 investigation, Jimmy Pitman, 46, was charged with a crash in Koreatown on Thursday, killing 9-year-old Nadir Gavalett and injuring a 19-year-old brother, a scooter passenger.
The crash occurred around 7:27pm at the intersection of New Hampshire and Fourth Avenue, LAPD confirmed. According to LAPD, the RV was turning left in New Hampshire, southbound New Hampshire, when it was about to turn left when it collided with Nadir.
Law enforcement sources said they investigated that NBC4 did not have a valid license for the driver and voluntarily agreed to a blood collection after crashing.
Pittman was charged with manslaughter of a general vehicle while driving drunk under the influence of his injuries. He pleaded not guilty and his bail was set at $230,000.
He returned to court on August 15th.
The criminal charges also listed previous felony convictions, mostly drug-related offences, against Pittman in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, in December 2005.
Candles and flowers were left at the crash site to commemorate Nadir. The neighbor told NBCLA that the boy whose father works as a street vendor and his brother live in the neighborhood with his family.
