Deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office shot dead a 67-year-old man with disabilities.
According to the sheriff’s office, Kenneth Vaughn, who lived in a home in Orangevale, a suburb of Sacramento, had fired a gun through a fence next door at someone else’s pool.
Lawmakers arrived in the block around 4:30pm on Saturday and instructed neighbors to evacuate nearby residences or to evacuate them.
Sheriff’s deputies parked an armored vehicle outside Vaughan’s house and were able to contact him, but Vaughan said he had mobility issues and couldn’t get out. He told deputies he was armed with a gun loaded with luggage, according to the sheriff’s office.
He told deputies they could help him walk by meeting him at his door, but then at 7:30pm he closed all the blinds in the house, the sheriff’s office said.
Vaughn repeatedly refused to surrender and began threatening to shoot deputies, the agency said.
Around 9:50pm Vaughn fired a shot at deputies outside the house, and according to the sheriff’s office the adjutant struck Vaughn in the chest and returned the fire.
He died at the scene.
A neighbor who witnessed many of the scenes but asked not to be identified said that Vaughn was a quiet, older man visited by caretakers and mostly protected by himself.
He would wave to overtake his neighbor, but that was about it, the neighbor said.
The neighbor listened throughout the evening as sheriff’s deputies spoke through the speaker and asked Vaughan to leave the house safely and surrender.
After the shooting, a neighbor spoke to Vaughn’s son and said he was told he was suffering from drug and alcohol problems. The son told his neighbor that he had been working with police for years to confiscate Vaughn’s weapons.
“I feel bad because no one around here knew how bad he was doing,” the neighbor said. “It’s just tragic.”
