After President Donald Trump held a campaign rally a year ago after an attempted assassination at a Pennsylvania butler, crowds traded “American” chants for the most expensive people, and vehicles directed at media gatherings at Riser, the press.
Veteran political reporter Salena Zito spoke with Fox News Digital ahead of the release of her new book, “Butler: The Non-Summary of Donald Trump’s Nearly Assassination and the Battle of America’s Heartland.” Zito found himself right away in the safe boundary of stairs from Trump when gunmen unleashed gunshots on the crowd a year ago.
“It wasn’t directed at the media,” Jeet said of the passionate Trump supporters who began to face the media after Trump was out of sight. “It’s pointing at the camera and letting the country know that this is unacceptable, our country is at risk and we need to be strong about it.”
Zito, who has built a career telling real stories from America’s Heartland, said he spoke to Trump supporters who can be seen screaming on cameras in videos played around the world.

“They confirmed it. “We weren’t blaming the press. We were pissed about everything that led to this in our country, so we wanted to show rebellion against it,” Jeet said.

Fox News was confirmed ahead of the one anniversary of Trump’s first assassination attempt, in which six Secret Service agents were suspended without pay after 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired on Trump at a rally in western Pennsylvania last summer.
Supervisors and line-level agents were suspended in February in a 10-42-day range without wages, and the Secret Service was confirmed to Fox News.
Speaking to Fox News Digital following an initial report on agent outages, Zito said it was “well guaranteed” to make logistical decisions.

“The man and woman who were in the care of President Trump that day will clearly say that his details and that buffer was on top of everything,” Zito said. “These men and women were doing their job when they put themselves in the fire line.”
Jeet, who refused to get off when he first heard the shot, said Trump was “surrounded by blue waters.”
“They put him in a protective position and put their lives on the line,” Zito said. “Nothing should be taken from that courage at that moment. These field officers were the heroes of the day.”
Trump has almost recovered from assassination, with bullets not grazing in his ears thanks to the immigration charts he had turned his head. Firefighter Corey Comperatore, attendees of one rally, was killed, and the other two were seriously injured by Crooks’ gunshots.

In the moment after the shooting, Jeet said what she saw next was “really very remarkable.”
“People were pretty neat and there, not in a hurry. There were no stampedes. You saw the Medic looking after the fallen people. [or] He was injured. But you mostly saw people coming out of each other and coming out across the field,” Zito explained.
Zito said it was “surprising” to see “how people who were ordered left.” An hour later, when she returned to the large parking lot, they didn’t let go of one car, so thousands of Trump supporters gathered.

“These people are out of the car, they share the water, they are hugging each other, they are making sure they are okay, they are sharing the food. They are just talking.
