San Pedro’s waterfront refresh has taken a major step forward with one of its iconic restaurants signing a long-term contract.
The famous San Pedro Fish Market, which has been around for decades, has signed a nearly 50-year lease.
Once the first phase is complete, it will be built next to what developers are calling “California’s largest Ferris wheel.”
Like a glittering industrial cathedral above the water, the completed buildings of the first phase of the redo of the San Pedro waterfront, known as “West Harbor,” usher in new beginnings.
Eric Johnson of the West Harbor Project showed NBC4 the 30-foot-tall interior, glass, steel and concrete that will make up the 350,000-square-foot project that will bring water closer to people.
The Port of Los Angeles, which is investing $1 billion into its port, has built a new mile-long promenade separating the complex from the ocean.
The first phase of buildings in the complex will house retail stores and restaurants.
Once the drywall was completed, the real estate agent and potential vendors had their first viewing.
Phase 2 also promises recreation, a 50,000-square-foot pickleball court, the state’s largest Ferris wheel, which would dwarf Santa Monica at 175 feet tall, and an outdoor park.
The restaurant will be built next door to the San Pedro Fish Market, which just signed a 49-year lease for a 3,000-seat restaurant.
Additional phases could include a 6,200-seat amphitheater at the water’s edge.
The project hopes to bring new life and renewed interest to the city by the bay.
Businesses could begin moving into Phase 1 as early as next year, and Phase 2 should be completed by the end of the summer.
