Tens of thousands of Southern California Edison customers are without power amid dangerous fire weather and fierce Santa Ana winds that sparked a devastating 10,400-acre wildfire in Ventura County.

As a precautionary measure, SCE implemented public safety power outages in parts of Los Angeles, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino counties on Wednesday, leaving many residents and businesses in chaos.

High winds also made roads particularly dangerous, with a big rig flipping over on Highway 210 earlier in the day, causing a major traffic jam.

National Weather Service officials extended a red flag warning until 9 a.m. Thursday after observing wind gusts of up to 40 mph in Ventura County, where the wildfire continues to burn with 0% containment.

Firefighters try to extinguish a fire burning a building as winds from the Santa Ana Mountains burn acres and acres in Camarillo, California, Nov. 6, 2024. On November 6th, a wildfire fueled by strong winds spiraled out of control near Los Angeles. , many residents were ordered to evacuate and some were taken to hospitals. “I think it was around 4 a.m. and we lost power because of the high winds,” said Tony Lobos, who owns a liquor store in Santa Clarita. “When I checked online, it said it wouldn’t be restored until 9pm tomorrow.”

The store owner added that there are currently a lot of products in the store that could deteriorate.

“I have to go buy a generator to power up all the freezers and refrigerators. I hope nothing goes bad,” he said.

Due to the high risk of fire, fire officials said they were on standby to prepare for further outbreaks and urged residents to stay at home if possible and to use extreme caution if they must go out. .

Southern California Edison said it’s unclear exactly when power will be restored to the outed areas, but it could be tomorrow.
