Authorities confirmed Monday.
Alejandro Oliveros Acosta, 45, was booked to Santa Ana Prison last week on felony charges related to animal cruelty, but was later released on bail, the Santa Ana Police Department said.
Acosta, who is said to be a serial cat murderer, is accused of inviting cats to food and stepping on them when the animal approaches.
A Santa Ana resident was arrested at her home last week. It is said that many cats have been killed or abused.
“We ask the public to recognize the strong sentiment that this case has created and to allow the judicial process to take that course,” police accused.
There was some destruction associated with the incident when emotions boiled up during the animal vigil. Some people became out of control and threw things into the neighborhood, police said.
According to the Santa Ana Police Department, “Damage to life and property has consequences and those engaged in criminal acts are held liable.”
In recent weeks, multiple pet owners and witnesses have reported that cats were killed or abused in their neighborhoods, identifying Acosta as the perpetrator.
