Santa Clarita Park late night party problem spot, minor drinking

Santa Clarita’s popular family park has appeared in the news after violence broke out among some teenagers, with two teenagers being taken to hospital and another arrested.

Residents of the area begin to appear in the rather distant Pacific Crest Park, located at 29051 Garnet Canyon Drive between 9pm and 11pm, with the spot appearing to be a place for underage children to drink and party.

During the day, the park near Saugus is a field of youth football practice, explained Coach Cecilio Valdivia, where different departments play.

While the family and their children pack the playground, the walkway pulls out joggers, but it’s night when a neighbor, like Derek Shirley, says the problem begins.

“They talk to another group of 10 people, they tell another group of 10 people, and all of a sudden they’ll be 100,” she said. “Unfortunately, for 100 people, they’re probably drinking.”

Alcohol was a factor in the August 2 incident, prompting a 911 call from residents near the park around 11 p.m., according to the LA County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say two teenagers were hospitalized, including someone with a broken bottle above their heads when the fight broke out at a gathering in a Santa Clarita park. One teenager was taken into custody in connection with the incident. Authorities said that a certain point, a fight broke out during the gathering, and the male boy was taken into custody to crush the bottle on someone else’s head.

The victim was taken to hospital with injuries described by lawmakers as “non-life threatening.” Another boy was transported with an unspecified injury.

Video obtained by KTLA shows the deputy detaining a male teenager at a muzzle and sitting behind a squad car near the entrance to the In-In-Nout drive-Thru. LASD did not expressly state how and when he got there.

“It’s going to get you out of control,” Shirley said. “You can’t attack people. It’s just ridiculous.”

According to LASD, that same night, just a few miles away, several adults were arrested for holding a party where minors were drinking. Deputies noted that some of those same minors were found at Pacific Crest Park after their arrests.

Greg Springer, a resident of Saugus, said he was not surprised by the incident. This is because if many of those kids gather together unsupervised, it is likely that problems will arise.

“Parents have been taking their kids tightly out of chains and know where they are, who they are hanging out with, what’s the same old stuff,” he said.

In the meantime, LASD said it plans to implement Santa Clarita’s curfew law, which prohibits people under the age of 18 from 10pm to 6am, where adults are not allowed, particularly around Pacific Crest Park.
