Burglars broke into a Santa Monica apartment complex that had been fumigated to kill pests, leaving residents in disbelief.
Surveillance camera video showed two men entering one of the vacant rooms during fumigation in late December. Residents of several other units also returned to their homes to find their homes ransacked.
The video shows two hooded men looking around the apartment, spending time going through closets and putting items into bags when no one is around. Residents were instructed to leave the complex on December 27th for fumigation and return on December 30th.
On’s resident was out of the country at the time.
“They opened everything and took everything out,” Hai Hoang said. “Yes, it’s the same in the kitchen. They take everything out and go through it, and if there’s a box in there, they open it. Same thing in the guest room and master bedroom.”
Huang said nothing was stolen. He brought back many of his valuables before leaving the country.
Anyone with information about the robbery was asked to call the Santa Monica Police Department.
A similar crime was reported at a Playa del Rey condo in mid-December. More than 20 homes were robbed during the fumigation operation, which lasted four days.
