Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer’s poll counts in his hometown of New York has been hit hard.
Senate Democrats and longtime lawmakers, who avoided government shutdowns and were supported by President Donald Trump, faced a fierce backlash from within his own party in March to support a Republican federal fundraising bill that opposes most Congressional Democrats.
The anger by the Democrats appears to be reflected in a new New Yorker poll conducted by Siena University.
Schumer’s favourite rating took place April 14-16 and is at a 39% advantage and 49% disadvantage among New York voters who were questioned in the vote released Tuesday.

It’s the worst show by Schumer in 20 years when Siena University has polled in New York.
“For the first time in the University of Siena poll: Schumer is 10 points underwater, with multiple voters looking at him at a disadvantage,” said Stephen Greenberg, a poller at University of Siena.
Promoting the deterioration of Schumer numbers is an advantage among Democrats.

“He continues to be seen at a disadvantage by more than two-thirds of Republicans and the majority of independents, but Schumer has seen his position as Democrats, particularly the liberals,” Greenberg said. “Democrats are looking at Schumer favorably from 68-23% to 52-38%, but he is still favorably seen by multiple liberals, 47-41%, but that’s down from 68-21%.”
Polls show Schumer’s favorable ratings are a hit, but they also show that the number of MPs Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is rising.

Ocasio-Cortez, a four-term Democrat and progressive champion from New York City, is unfavourable at 47% and 33% among New York voters. This is the jump from the last 38% to 39% that Siena asked about Ocasio-Cortez among a sample of statewide respondents four years ago.
According to polls, 64% of Democrats look at Ocasio-Cortez in a favorable light than Schumer and the Democratic government of Cathy Hochul. Six in ten Republicans were asked in polls in a negative way by Ocasio-Cortez, and independents were split evenly.

Schumer has repeatedly argued that the vote to advance the GOP federal funding bill is the best of two bad options, and that the government shutdown will give more empowerment to Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, the president’s special White House adviser who actively cuts up federal workers as he pilots the Doge.
Schumer has maintained control of the Senate Democrats’ Caucus up until now.
While Senate minority leaders have not stood up for reelection until 2028, there are already proposals that Ocasio-Cortez could stake a major challenge against Schumer.

Hochul, who will be serving her second term as governor of New York for four years next year, enjoys her approval and increased positive reviews, according to the vote.
The governor’s approval rate is up 48% to 45% from Siena College’s March poll.
And Hochul’s preferred rating is now 44%-43%, up from 40%-50% last month.
Only 39% of voters are ready to re-elect Hochul in 2026, while 48% say they want to see “other people,” but her status has been an improvement since March, with only 34% hoping to have re-election and 56% preferring someone else.
Regarding the governor’s approval and favorable rating, Greenberg said “Hochul improved the most among the upstate and female voters.”

Republican lawmakers Elise Stefanik and Mike Lawler, as well as Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman, are all considering launching a GOP campaign against the governor.
Democrat Governor’s Association spokesman Kevin Donohoe pointed to Siena’s latest poll findings, claiming “New Yorkers are a strong supporter of Governor Hochul’s leadership as they fight for important outcomes for them, from public safety to low cost.”
