The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the government department’s efficiency has access to a social security system with sensitive information.
The ruling blocked a Maryland lower court order that prevented Doge from seeking certain social security information, subject to federal privacy laws.
Data from the US Social Security Agency includes Social Security numbers, medical information, citizenship records, school records and tax returns for millions of Americans.

“Under the current circumstances, the SSA concludes that in order for those members to do their job, they can proceed to make it accessible to members of the SSA Doge team to the agency records in question,” the court said in an order that it had not signed.
Six conservative justice opposed the verdict and three liberal justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor.

Jackson said the ruling created a “significant privacy risk” for millions of Americans by “providing free data access to Doge” despite the inability to demonstrate the need or interest in compliance with existing privacy safeguards.
The ruling came shortly after Doge’s former chief, Elon Musk, left the government and exchanged personal attacks that were sparked by the president’s disagreement over the “big and beautiful” bill.

Doge’s path after mask exits are not clear, Trump and Musk previously said work for the newly created institution will continue.
The Trump administration has said Doge needs access to social security information to continue its core agenda of eradicating government waste.
Musk previously called Social Security the “Ponzi Plan” and insisted on eliminating waste from the program.
Maryland District Judge Ellen Hollander previously ruled that Social Security Doge’s efforts were a “fishing expedition” based on “more than suspicion” of fraud. However, she granted access to anonymous data for Doge workers who had undergone background checks.

The Court of Appeals did not immediately unblock it. A conservative judge on the other side said there was no evidence that Doge had “targeted snooping” or exposed personal information.
