A quarter inch may sound like a lot in itself, but the effect is cumulative, with sea level four inches higher than in 1993, and satellites were first used to record ocean heights.
Since that first record, sea levels have risen more than twice as fast as theirs.
“By the end of the century, even if greenhouse gas emissions follow a relatively low pathway in the coming decades, the global average sea level is likely to exceed one foot (0.3 meters) above 2,000 levels,” the National Maritime and Atmospheric Administration said.
