New Haven, Connecticut (WTNH) – From the city of New Haven to the Animal Rescue Clinic at Mystic Aquarium, the young gray seal has traveled quite a bit of the past few days.
New Haven police were not usually phones.
“They thought it was a joke, but they weren’t,” said New Haven police officer Christian Brookhart. “It was a street seal.”
The seal, which is thought to be around five or six weeks, was found in the middle of Chapel Street, near East Street. Police cut off the area to keep the area safe until the deep, mystical aquarium arrived.

“It was definitely a concern for us to see him in the bustle of the city,” said Francesca Batalia, animal rescue technician at Mystic Aquarium.
Battagrabia said this wasn’t the first time an aquarium animal rescue team has seen a seal. He was in Branford last week, and on Saturday he was discovered perhaps more suited, next to the Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill on South Water Street in New Haven.

“We see him still bright, vigilant and looking good,” she said. “Maybe we could move him to a safe beach, so our team did that. But unfortunately, he’s back in the middle of the city there. Ta.”
“I don’t know why it was here,” Brookhart said. “I thought it was for clam pizza.”
The aquarium says that a puppy who weighs just 28 pounds and a little less weight would likely hurt him by following his instincts to escape from water and other seals.
“He probably just lost it and thought these were my instincts, but unfortunately, it’s not actually a safe place for him because the area is developing like that.” Batalia said.

The goal is to bring this little man back into the wild. He will now get a more stable diet of fish and liquids. But he will never be raised by hand.
“We want him to hunt himself and get what he needs to support himself,” Batalia said.
It will give him the best chance for survival once he is released.
