Authorities are searching for a hit-and-run driver involved in a fatal crash on Highway 101 in Camarillo early Tuesday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a caller initially reported that a semi-truck and a car were involved in an incident on the northbound side of the highway near Carmen Drive just before 1 a.m.
Arriving officers determined that the two vehicles involved were actually a black 2007 Lexus IS 250 and a gray 2010 Ford Mustang.
Witnesses told investigators that the Lexus was speeding in the northbound lane when it swerved to the right and struck a concrete wall, causing the car to roll over and come to rest in the lane.
Seconds later, the Lexus was struck by a Ford Mustang that crashed into a guardrail in the median, CHP said.
The driver of the Lexus, identified as a 40-year-old Oxnard man, was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
“The driver of the Ford Mustang left the scene on foot immediately after the accident and is currently unaccounted for,” the CHP said in a statement.
Investigators have not said whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident, but urged the public to be careful as the year-end and New Year holidays approach.
“Today’s tragic events serve as a reminder to all of us that life matters as we enter a new year,” said Lt. Gov. James Ferguson. “We encourage you to plan ahead to ensure a safe night.”
Anyone with more information about the crash is asked to call the CHP office at 805-662-2640.
