Authorities believe they have found the second body of two brothers who went missing during a duck hunting trip in Northern California last month.
Andrew Cornett, 19, and Wesley Cornett, 17, of Yuba County, were last seen hunting on Dec. 14, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office. , the Thermalit Afterbay downstream of Lake Oroville.
Andrew Cornett’s body was discovered on December 31st.
Over the weekend, authorities told the Sacramento Bee that they believe brother Wesley’s body was found in the water near Highway 162 by a passerby. They are awaiting the results of a DNA test to confirm his identity.
Officials said the brothers became trapped shortly after going into the water three weeks ago.
Sheriff’s officials said Andrew Cornett called 911 around 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 14 to report his brother’s kayak had tipped over. Officials said dispatchers advised the man to stay in his kayak and not go into the water.
But Andrew Cornett insisted on jumping into the water to save his brother, sheriff’s officials said. The brothers eventually submerged in the water, but neither was wearing a life jacket.
Butte County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene about 15 minutes after the 911 call and a search was underway, sheriff’s officials said.
The boy’s mother called Andrew a hero for trying to jump into the water to save his brother.
“This was a freak accident and my family and I are trying to come to terms with it, but we also have four girls at home who still need care,” April Clark wrote in a GoFundMe post about her sons. I wrote it.
Family and friends held a vigil Saturday night not far from where Wesley Cornett’s body was found.
