A search was underway Tuesday for two men who did not return to the boat dock as scheduled and were not in the wreckage of the boat off the coast of Palos Verdes.
Lt. Gov. Sondra Neen told City News Service. The men were scheduled to arrive near Cabrillo Marina.
The Coast Guard sent a vessel to search the area and was able to send an aircraft into the search late Tuesday, Neen said. Other agencies were also using drones to search the waters.
As of 1:30 p.m., the men had not been found, but during the search an overturned boat on rocks and debris was found off the 1800 block of Paseo del Mar in Palos Verdes Estates.
The search came as authorities warned the public to stay away from Southland beaches due to large waves and dangerous rip currents.
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for Los Angeles County beaches until 9 p.m. Wednesday and for Orange County until 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters said “large breaking waves” between 8 and 13 feet high were impacting west-facing coasts Tuesday morning. Those waves were expected to drop to about 6 to 10 feet by Tuesday afternoon, but would still be enough to pose a danger.
