President Donald Trump’s Democratic-led resolution to cancel tariffs on Canada passed the Senate Wednesday after several Republicans joined the counterparts in support of it.
Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkovsky of Alaska, Mitch McConnell, and Rand Paul of Kentucky supported the resolution and relied on the president. The final vote was between 51 and 48.
“As I always warn, tariffs are a bad policy, and trade wars with partners hurt the people who work the most. tariffs increase the costs of goods and services,” former GOP Sen. McConnell said in a subsequent statement.

Senate majority Whip John Baraso condemned the resolution passing, saying, “Senator Kane’s goal was not to create law. It was merely an effort to undermine President Trump’s successful work to secure a north border.”
“Speaker Johnson has already declared that Senator Kane’s resolution had died when he arrived in the House, which would never win it on President Trump’s desk,” he explained. “This meaningless messaging resolution will not stop Senate Republicans from making American communities safer.”
The privileged resolution is D-Va. It will end the emergency that was introduced by Senator Tim Kane and declared on February 1st at the Northern Border.
In an administrative policy statement ahead of the vote, Trump’s White House said it would urge the president to reject a resolution if his adviser passes the Senate.
“President Trump has committed to securing our borders and stopping the tragedy of fentanyl, which addicted to our community. He is streaming. Sen. Tim Kane is trying to undermine the president’s emergency declaration on the president’s northern boundary.
“Under the failure of Joe Biden’s leadership, criminal networks, fentanyl and terrorists were ramping along the northern border. Today’s stunts by Tim Kane prove once again that there is no mention of Democrats as they use national security issues for political conventions.

Kaine told Fox News Digital: “The Trump administration’s own threat assessment report on fentanyl never mentioned Canada. Trump’s order is a blatant abuse of his authority, and it’s important that Congress push back before it does any further damage to our economy and our relationship with one of our top trading partners.”
The resolution, due to its privileged nature, had to be brought to the floor for votes, and only a simple majority vote of the 51 senators had to pass.

Trump on Wednesday called on the True Society to several Republicans who warned against votes in favor of the resolution.
“I hope Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Markovsky of Alaska, and Rand Paul of Kentucky will fight the Democrats Wild and Fragrant push to drive on the Republican bandwagon and punish Canada to punish Canada for a fine to not punish Canada for sale. It’s expensive to distribute and buy,” he said in the post.
Collins made it clear in a floor statement earlier in the day that she would vote in favor of the resolution.
“President, prices that happen for Maine families are, whenever you go to the grocery store, fill your gas tanks, fill your heating oil tanks, and these tariffs are in effect, price increases are always going to be harmful.

He told reporters before the vote, “I think tariffs on trade between us and Canada will threaten our country in a recession. They are economically awful and lead to higher prices. Tariffs are simply taxes.
