Senate rejects Bernie Sanders’ efforts to block arms sales to Israel
Sanders introduced a similar proposal during the Biden administration in November 2024, but this failed too. Many of the same senators who voted in favor of the April 2025 proposal voted for resolutions under the Biden administration, with the exception of Senator Angus King, Maine, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, and Rafael Warnock of Georgia.
Shaheen’s office refers to a statement they issued Thursday, and the senator explains her vote.
“As a ranking member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I am deeply concerned with the collapse of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Immediate elimination of the conflict will provide humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians, release the remaining hostages, and avoid intermittent solutions to dive halts to prevent regional wars. To encourage Israel to advance in these conversations,” Shaheen said.
Speaking about the joint resolution of disapproval in November, Sanders argued that the Israeli government is ruled “not only by right-wing extremists, but also by religious enthusiasts.” He also accused Netanyahu of violating international law.
