There was pool furniture in the background. There was a tropical drink, which looked like a margarita with cherry decorated. Then the deported prisoners and the American senator sat down and chatted.
Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen on Friday accused the Salvadoran government of aiming to paint a picture of the slow restingness of Kilmer Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported.
Van Hollen mentioned “margatagate,” a term that bouncing around social media all day.
“No one drinks margaritas or sugary water,” the Democratic senator called the whole situation “the length of time President Bukere does to deceive people what is going on” a “letter.”
Abrego Garcia, a Salvador citizen who lived in Maryland, was sent to El Salvador by the Trump administration in March despite an immigration court order preventing his deportation.
US President Donald Trump and El Salvador President Naive Buquere said that despite the Trump administration calling his deportation a mistake and that the US Supreme Court has called the administration to promote his return, there is no basis for him to return him to the United States.
At a press conference Friday at Dulles International Airport shortly after returning from El Salvador, Maryland Democrats said they were aiming to “deceive” people about what happened during their meeting with Abrego Garcia by posting photos containing drinks that looked like alcohol.
When he and Abrego Garcia first sat at a meeting at the hotel where Van Hollen was staying, the senator said, “I just wore glasses on the table, maybe I had coffee.”
Van Hollen then said on the sidelines of the 30-minute meeting that “one of the government” left other drinks at the table and placed salt and sugar on top. “But they look like margaritas.”
The Centre for Terrorism Confinement (CECOT) is a Megaprison located in Tecolca, El Salvador.
X On Thursday night, Buquel posted a photo of Van Hollen sitting with Abrego Garcia, including a drink with Maraschino cherry.
“Kilmer Abrego Garcia miraculously rose from “death camp” and “torture” and sipped a margarita with Senator Van Hollen in El Salvador’s tropical paradise! “Bukel wrote with the addition of tropical drink emojis.
Van Hollen also pointed out that the Buquere government initially proposed that he and Abrego Garcia hold their meeting poolside at the hotel rather than the restaurant setting they had convened.
“They want to create this look that life was lovely for Kilmer,” Van Hollen said.
At a press conference Friday, Van Hollen also revealed that Abrego Garcia told him he was no longer detained at the Security Terrorism Confinement Centre, or CECOT.
“They decided that it would not be a good idea to continue to detain Abrego Garcia, who no one has access to him,” Van Hollen said. He added that Abrego Garcia told him he had no contact with anyone outside the prison since he was taken from the United States.
It was unclear where Abrego Garcia was taken after his meeting with Van Hollen.
Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sula, wiped out her tears as Van Hollen spoke about her husband’s comments about her desire to talk to her wife. She didn’t speak during the press conference.
