Services Affected by Strikes for Workers in LA County – See NBC Los Angeles

Residents will see 48 hours of halting or disruptions of various services across the county where access to certain facilities has been restricted or suspended, as approximately 55,000 workers from the Los Angeles County government left their jobs on Monday evening due to a two-day strike.

Even facilities open during strikes could cause delays due to shortages, the county warned.

health care

At least seven health centres offering primary care, mental health and pharmacy services will close on Tuesday and Wednesday. Typically, customers seeking care from closed clinics are asked to contact a nearby health center.

Below is a list of closed clinics.

The county website says that day-to-day operations at other clinics remain open, but most appointments for tuberculosis, vaccinations and sexual health services will be rescheduled.

Medical services for children

School-based wellness centres will be completely or partially closed, affecting substance use prevention efforts and affecting student one-on-one counseling.

Additionally, all services by the county’s mobile therapy unit will be cancelled during a strike, forcing thousands of children with several physical and intellectual disabilities to miss out on treatment.

LA County Library

The county-run public library provides space for after-school students while providing free Wi-Fi access. The digital library on the LA County Library System website is still open, but 20 libraries across the region will be closed until Thursday morning.

The next location will be closed during the strike.

Beach and harbor

Some beach toilets will be closed, and portable toilets and hand washing stations will remain open to the public.

Animal care and control

L.A. County residents who wanted to retrieve their pets from the county shelter or adopt animals could experience delays, the county said.

However, staff will still respond to prioritization calls, including those relating to injured animals and bite incidents.
