After Sgt. Shiou Deng, a 26-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, was killed in a crash crash along the 405 highway near Westwood on Monday morning.
Den was hit and killed near the Getty Center Monday morning after being stopped to provide help to two crash victims. When Denn exited the car, he was attacked by another driver and taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he died.
Take care of vulnerable people in Los Angeles
Deng joined LAPD in October 1998.
During his time as an executive, he spent 17 years working in the Mental Health Assessment Unit, where he focused on vulnerable community members.
In 2023 he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to West LA Station.
“He was a deeply respected leader within our department and a trusted parent of our community,” Chief Jim McDonnell wrote in a statement Monday.
“He might be a comedian.”
Den was loved by his colleagues for his kindness, compassion and humor.
DET.VICTOR LOPEZ had known Deng since meeting him at the LAPD Academy, but described Deng’s humor as “the next level.”
“He could actually be a comedian, and that’s what I miss most,” Lopez said.
Lopez added that he “bringed light” to many situations, adding that he was a lot of fun being around.
Den’s colleagues knew he was “very funny” and “compassionate about mistakes,” McDonnell said.
“When I think about him, he lost a hero,” he said.
Den is survived by his wife and parents.
