The man waving a machete in the middle of Los Angeles Avenue was shot by a police officer Sunday morning in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.
Officers were dispatched to the Figueroa Avenue and Olympic Boulevard areas at 9:14am Sunday, according to Officer Norma Eisenman, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.
“The suspect has moved towards the officers,” according to the LAPD statement. The car fled south on Figueroa Street, where officers were chased.
“The pursuit ended on Figueroa Street just south of 12th Avenue, where the suspect, the sole resident of the vehicle, left while armed with a machete,” police said. “The suspect was charged by an officer and a shooting occurred involving an officer.”
The suspect was injured in the shooting and officers assisted at the scene, police said. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance where he had surgery.
Officers recovered the machete and booked it as evidence, police said.
Figuero A Street remained closed for police shooting investigations between the Olympics and Pico Boulevard.
