An investigation is underway after the 12-year-old was shot dead at a park in Compton on Friday, authorities say.
Police responded to the shooting just before 4pm at Oleandor Park, 404 West Figeroa Street.
Police say a black man and a person wearing a ski mask shot a young boy before approaching the park and fled on foot.
The 12-year-old was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. It is unknown whether the shooting was targeted.
Details that led to the shooting were not available immediately.
The filming occurred during busy times in the park. Neighbors tell NBC4 he heard some shots ring.
“The next thing you hear is the five gunshots,” Graidys Vasquez said. “We went outside and saw the poor kids outside.”
People in the area tried to help the boy before authorities arrived. Neighbors say they saw an increase in violence in their communities.
“My mother usually doesn’t go outside due to circumstances that have been happening recently,” Vasquez said. “I know how gunshots are happening these days and it scares me. I don’t even want to sleep just thinking about it.”
