Police say the man fatally shot his brother after witnessing his 80-year-old mother suffocating at his Viva Grove home.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a shooting at about 1:25pm on Friday in the 400 block of North Alfred Street.
According to LAPD officer Norma Eisenman, the conflict began when a 61-year-old man used a baseball bat to injure his mother’s windows and personal belongings and threatened her.

The woman then called out her 57-year-old son. He said he arrived to find his mother choking on his brother. The young son fired a warning shot using a shotgun, but the choking continued.
Police said the 57-year-old “feels that she had no choice but to shoot her brother to save her mother’s life.”
According to Eisenman, the shooting was “a legitimate murder, not a detective murder,” and the young son is not booked. Neither he nor his brother’s name has been released.
The mother suffered a head injury requiring sutures, Eisenman said.
“The archer saved his mother’s life,” said LAPD Det. Samuel Marlo told KTLA. “He had no choice, but to kill his own brother. And choking at 80 while your face was hitting the ground? That would have certainly caused her death.”
