As many people are planning to travel to Indio for this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, they may find different types of signs.
The Southern California nonprofit has launched its “Real Coachella” billboard campaign by setting up 10 signs featuring farm workers working in fields in Coachella Valley.
“Coachella is known for its festivals every year during these times. It brings people from all over the world, without knowing that there is a real Coachella.”
The campaign, which began during the pandemic, focuses on highlighting immigration and its contribution to California’s economy.
Coachella Valley has more than 10,000 farm workers as immigrants create nearly $512 billion in product for California, according to Gallegos.
“Immigration is a blessing to our state and our nation,” Gallegos said. “As a state, we are agriculture is the backbone of our economy, and without strong workers, we don’t have that economy.”
Pedro Zacarias, who works in Thermal’s field, has been featured on Billboard previously.
The Trump administration’s strict immigration policy has made him say that while he fears his future, he continues to move forward to reach his American dream of becoming a homeowner.
“I have a family. It worries me,” Zacharias said in Spanish. “My dreams aren’t dead for me. It’s just stopped, but it’s not dead.”
According to the nonprofit, the Real Coachella Billboard campaign will continue until May 1st.
