Silver fires in Inyo and Mono counties continued to burn Monday morning, burning 1,250 acres and spurring evacuation.
The vegetation fuel flame was first reported Sunday at 2:11pm on Silver Canyon Road north of Bishop, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The fire then jumped up the highway, threatening “multiple structures,” Cal Fire BDU said in a post on X.
According to Cal Fire, the evacuation order is valid in Inyo County law, Chalfant in Mono County, and White Mountain Estates Neighbarse. The fire was still 0% included as of Monday morning.
The ancient Bristol Corn Pine Forest, with the world’s oldest trees, is located in White Mountain, east of the flames, but to comment on the potential threat to the pine, it was not immediately able to reach Calfire representatives.
According to Cal Fire, the fire intensified overnight due to the terrain and strong winds. The winds are charging up to 35 miles at Bishop’s airport. The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning until 9pm on Monday. The southwest winds are expected to range from 25-35 mph, with gusts expected to range from up to 65 mph.
Authorities have established an evacuation center at 58869 Highway 120 Benton Community Center in Benton, according to the California Highway Patrol.
