Six people were shot Wednesday afternoon in South Los Angeles, all of whom appear to have been unintended targets, authorities said. Police are searching for three suspects who fled the scene after the shooting.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, around 3:15 p.m., three male suspects drove up to the intersection of 74th Street and Figueroa Avenue and opened fire, striking six victims.
Five of the victims were women, four were between the ages of 39 and 63, and one was a 36-year-old man, according to a Los Angeles Police Department report. The age of one female victim is unknown. All were on foot when they were shot.
The victims were taken to local hospitals, and the Los Angeles Fire Department initially said one person was in critical condition, but by late Wednesday, Los Angeles Police Department officials said they were all stable.
“We do not believe they were the intended targets” of the shootings, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Dean Vinluan told KTLA. “Maybe they just got caught in the crossfire.”
He said detectives are investigating a link between the shooting and gang violence, but that no link has been confirmed. Although the shooting occurred near a homeless encampment, Los Angeles Police Department officials said the shooting did not appear to be related to homelessness in any way.
The suspect’s vehicle, a four-door Chevrolet with black rims, was last seen driving southbound at 74 Flower Street, Los Angeles Police Department Public Information Officer Tony Yim said.
Lim said one of the suspects was wearing a black hoodie, the second was wearing a blue hoodie and the third was wearing a gray hoodie.
The Los Angeles Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the 77th Street Division at (323) 786-5420 or Crimestoppers anonymously at (800) 222-8477.
