Governors of six states in the northeastern United States have invited the prime ministers of six Canadian provinces to meet in Boston as both sides face the impact of tariffs.
President Donald Trump’s policy of imposing tariffs on products imported from America’s northern neighbours and other countries has sparked controversy both in the US and overseas.
The group of governors includes five Democrats, including Massachusetts Gov. Maureen Janet Mills, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, Rhode Island Gov. Daniel McKee, and one Republican – Vermont Gov. Phil Scott.

The governor is inviting Canadian Prime Ministers of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Quebec, Healy and Mills.
“While the international fuss over tariffs threatens to overturn the economy of each community, we write to reaffirm friendship and unique interdependence: We are important relationships based not only on mutual financial benefits but also on family and cultural ties that have been centuries ago.
“As governors of the Northeast, we hope to maintain an open line of communication and cooperation, identify paths to overcome these uninvited tariff challenges, and help the economy endure.

Trump, who has repeatedly shown that Canada wants to become America’s 51st state, met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Kearney on Tuesday.
“Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker asked Trump if he would tell Kearney about making it his 51st state.

“I always talk about it. Why do you know? We help Canada adjust $200 billion a year. We don’t really need their cars. We don’t need their energy. We don’t want their energy.
Mills said the economic and cultural ties between the US and Canada are “strung by the president’s haphazard tariffs and harmful rhetoric targeting its north neighbours,” according to a press release.
