Fontana police shot dead a man who responded to a 911 call early Sunday morning, waving a gun around and touched an investigation and said he had waving the gun around.
Kevin Reyes Portillo, 31, was shot in an apartment in the 9100 block of Dating Street just after 1am on Sunday when he allegedly pointed a gun at a police officer who opened the door.
Police had been dispatched to the complex in response to a 911 call on domestic violence. Portillo was treated on the scene and taken to a local hospital where he died, authorities said.
Fontana police officer Steve Reid couldn’t immediately say how many officers responded to the incident, how many people fired at Portillo, or how many times he was shot.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office did not comment on the investigation into the incident.
The Fontana Police Department was scrutinized by the state Department of Justice for the 2023 murder of Jaime Valdez. The investigation is underway.
Last year, the department paid nearly $1 million to settle with a man who said he had forced him to confess a murder that never happened during the course of a 17-hour interrogation.
