A teenager was arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly shooting and killing a man with a flare gun in Huntington Beach on Friday night.
Huntington Beach Police Department officials responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of Florida Street and Utica Avenue around 8:40pm on Friday.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the victim identified as Jose Manuel Nares of Huntington Beach by the Orange County Coroner and were suffering from a gunshot wound caused by Flare Gun. The 29-year-old received medical assistance and was taken to the hospital where he died.
The suspect whose identity is withheld because he is a juvenile, escaped from the scene, but “will be located immediately by the responding officers,” Kuchila said. The weapons were also recovered.
The teen was booked at Orange County Boys Hall, Kuchila said.
Statistics on flare cancer deaths are limited. However, Brian Smith, Huntington Beach Police Department, said the flare gun could be modified to fire projectiles that could cause injury or to fire other types of ammunition. “Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe this is an isolated incident and there is no continuing threat to the community,” Kuchira said of the Huntington Beach shooting.
