The Venice Canal Association said in a social media post that several dogs have died in the Venice region in the past 10 days due to unknown causes.
At least five “healthy neighbour dogs” have died, while another “healthy dogs” have died.

While these symptoms and the cause of dog death have not been identified, the association said it could be linked to rodent venom, toxic algae blooms, or other toxins or viruses.
“The dogs we lost were more than pets. They were a beloved family, loyal companions, and a vital part of the Venetian Canal community. They were truly overlooked and always remember their love,” the association said in a social media post.
Pet owners are encouraged to take precautions and connect to the leash while walking their pets along the canals of Venice.
They are also urged to avoid sniffing, licking pets, or eating grass or other things while walking. You should also avoid drinking water from canals, puddles, or bowls of shared water.
If your pet owner detects abnormal symptoms, it is recommended that you take it to the vet immediately.
