Shoppers in the produce section were surprised Thursday afternoon when parts of the roof of Azusa’s grocery store collapsed during a powerful storm.
No injuries have been reported at the San Gabriel Valley Community Smart & Final Store. Photos from shoppers inside the store showed part of the ceiling with a cave hanging from an display of apples and other fruits.
Ashley Andres was on the checkout line when he heard it loudly. Shoppers cried, and employees urged people to leave the store, she said.
People inside said they didn’t realize what had happened until they went outside to see the damage.
“It sounded like a ‘boom’ and things are just broken,” said Everett Torrance, who was eating the restaurant next door. “I could walk outside and see people running away.”
The store closed early and was tagged with a red tag, police said. No injuries have been reported.
The roof collapsed after a steady few hours of Los Angeles County, sometimes heavy rain, from the most important storm of the season. Parts of San Gabriel Valley received several inches of rain, including La City College (2.66), Eagle Rock Reservoir (4.17), and Eaton Dam (3.41 inches).
