Concerned teachers and community members are gathering to help senior Southern California students after being detained by immigrant staff.
Martir Garcia Lara is a student at Torrance Elementary School. On May 29th, he attended an immigration hearing in Houston, Texas with his father.
However, instead of receiving updates on his father’s immigrant status, the boy and his father were detained by US immigrants and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and separated from each other.

“He’s alone and can’t go home,” said PTA president Jasmine King.
The Torrance Elementary School teacher contacted King and the other PTAs and asked for help in one way or another to release the boy and his father and return him to Southern California.
“We haven’t received any information about why they were taken into custody,” King said. “All we know is that Martyle is in her fourth grade, without a father, without a parent, where she is probably in a place she doesn’t know.
King said the boy had been a student at Torrance Elementary School from first grade.
PTA members have since contacted federal, state and local leaders to intervene, asking other parents and community members to help in any way they can.
King said she and other PTA members were ready to help the boy and his father with legal or financial aid if they needed it.
