The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that an inmate facing 11 felonies at the Robert Presley Detention Center was pronounced dead in his cell.
After an inmate search, the deceased, whom authorities identified as 39-year-old Anthony Wayne Brooks of Riverside, was charged with five felony counts of lewd acts on a child under 14, as well as unlawful possession of a firearm and driving under the influence. It turned out that he had been charged with a crime. , vandalism, tools, etc.
Deputies found Brooks unresponsive Sunday in a single room in the residence and attempted life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, the sheriff’s office said.
However, despite their efforts, the sheriff’s office announced that Brooks was ultimately pronounced dead.
“Investigators with the Riverside Sheriff’s Office Correctional Central Investigation Division responded and assumed the investigation,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Investigators found no immediate signs of foul play, officials said.
Brooks was arrested by the Jurupa Valley Police Department on June 6, 2023, and was held without bail, according to Inmate Search. Brooks’ trial date was set for February 2025.
Three years earlier, on August 7, 2020, the Riverside Police Department charged Brooks with negligence with a firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and high-capacity magazine, and violating his probation and post-release community supervision, according to the department. was arrested. At the time of his arrest in 2020, police said Brooks was living in a modest residence.
“During the search of the home, officers discovered a semi-automatic handgun, a high-capacity magazine, and numerous ammunition,” the department said in a statement.
The sheriff’s office said Brooks’ death remains under investigation, but no further information was available as of Monday night.
