A weekend hike at Mount Bardi with a 40-year-old woman had to be rescued after being lost and stuck frozen on the Devil’s backbone trail, officials said.
In a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office, officials said Calabasas resident Schona Burger had been hiking for several hours since dispatching the service around 2:10pm on March 22.
SBSD’s dayshift helicopters are found in burgers under 9,000 feet on a 1-foot wide trail made up of shale rocks, snow and ice.
“One side of the trail was against the sharp rock face, while the other side was a serious slope to the canyon,” the release elaborated. “The burger was pushed into the rock face carrying the dog with smooth ice on either side of the dog. She was wearing a light jacket, shorts and tennis shoes.”
Based on the risk of a fall and the lack of her proper clothing, authorities said Hoist rescue was requested.

A sheriff’s rescue helicopter was deployed and rescuers were dropped to the burger. The 40-year-old was placed in a rescue harness and rolled up from the mountainside to safety with his dog.

There were no reports of injuries to the burger, her dog, or rescue team.
“The sheriff’s department wants to remind anyone heading towards the mountainous region to safely prepare proper hiking gear, equipment, clothing, food and water,” the official said. “First investigation of the area and weather forecasts can help with planning. The condition of the mountain can be dangerous and can change dramatically within a few minutes.”
Additionally, authorities said parts of Mount Bardi remain closed after the recent bridge fire and U.S. Forest Service rangers were able to issue quotations of up to $5,000 to people trespassing on closed trails.
